Audi A1 e-tron to Use UQM Electric Motors

The efforts made by German manufacturer Audi to launch its line of electric vehicles will be boosted by the electric motors developed by UQM Technologies, the chosen supplier of electric motors for Coda Automotive and Saab.

The announcement was made this week, after UQM received the contract to supply the motors for Audi's test fleet of A1 e-trons. Should the motors prove up to the task, it is likely a future production version of the A1 will use the same motors.

“This fleet order from Audi further validates the ability of our products to meet the demanding requirements of major automotive customers,” said Eric Ridenour, UQM CEO. “We are extremely well-positioned and prepared for growth as the electrification market continues to develop and expand.”

The motors to be deployed in the A1 e-tron have a peak output of 125 kW and 300 Nm of torque. UQM says the motors will feature CAN bus, serial communications and diagnostic capability.

In the A1, the motors will deliver 102 PS and can travel at top speeds of 81 mph (130 km/h). The range provided by the lithium-ion battery is estimated at 31 miles (50 km).

The details of the contract have not been made public (as in the number of motors to be shipped to Audi and the value of the contract). As a result of the contracts received this year, the company plans to produce 40,000 electric motors each year.

“Our solid history in developing electric propulsion systems has enabled us to secure another major international OEM fleet build program,” added Ridenour.
