Android Automotive is Google's big bet in the automotive industry in the long term, with the company working with carmakers to install the operating system in their future models.
However, the search giant is working on multiple fronts simultaneously, as it also needs Android Automotive to grow its app ecosystem.

This week, Deezer joined the group of apps available on Android Automotive, as it landed in BMW and Renault cars with the Faurecia Aptoide app store.

Chances are you never heard of Deezer if you live in the United States. I can't blame you, though, as the American market is dominated by Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, and other popular music streaming platforms.

In Europe, the same names lead the market, but Deezer, a company based in France, offers a solid alternative with access to an impressive music library. Deezer offers nearly the same feature lineup as Spotify, including a music discovery engine powered by a system called Flow. You start with your favorite songs and then let Deezer suggest similar songs, eventually helping you build a growing collection of tunes you enjoy.

Deezer comes to Android Automotive with the same feature lineup. Its interface won't be too different from a typical music streaming service, so you can easily navigate its features from your Android Automotive-powered infotainment screen.

The Android Automotive app ecosystem keeps growing, but so does Android Auto's. The last few weeks witnessed the debut of several high-profile Android Auto apps, some helping expand a new category that Google unlocked earlier this year.

Starting in 2023, Android Auto also supports smart home apps, so users can control their garage doors and home alarm systems from the infotainment screen. The added convenience is obvious, as drivers can open the garage door without picking up their mobile phones as they approach the entrance. As a result, several high-profile companies brought their apps to Android Auto in the last few weeks, with the number likely to grow in the coming months.

Furthermore, Android Auto is projected to receive more popular apps by the end of the year, including Zoom and The Weather Channel. Both confirmed upcoming updates with Android Auto support, but the release date is still unannounced. Google is also working with app developers to unlock more functionality in their Android Auto apps.

WhatsApp will soon support audio calls on Android Auto so users can call contacts via the Meta-owned app. The existing WhatsApp integration in Android Auto comes down to the messaging experience, as Google Assistant can read incoming messages and send replies using voice commands. The WhatsApp call support is also projected to launch for Android Auto users by the end of the year, with more in formation to go live closer to the debut.
