Mercedes, and all the other premium German automakers for that matter, have been held back by their fear of brand dilution. A couple of years ago, the gates have been opened wide and we have sporty SUVs, front-wheel drive and really small turbo engines coming in.
Due to fears of overlapping with other models, like the CL-Class, Mercedes never offered AMG versions of the E-Class Coupe and Convertible. Speaking with Pistonheads, Mercedes product manager Gerd Junginger said that not having an E63 AMG with two doors a mistake.
Now that the facelift has come out, it's too late to do anything about that, but as soon as the next generation comes out, that will all change. "Next time we won't make the same mistake," Junginger said.
It's still to early to speculate about what it will be like, but all-wheel drive should be offered, and a power output of almost 600 hp seems very likely.
