Last year, when Alpina revealed the XD3 Biturbo model, they were writing history. This is the first SUV ever made by the German tuner, a worthy competitor for BMW’s M50d models.
The guys from CAR Magazine took one for a spin to see if it justifies its enormous price tag. The thing about this car is that it doesn’t really make sense.

You already have the BMW X3 xDrive35d model that comes with a biturbo 3-liter diesel engine that makes 313 HP and 630 Nm of torque for a lot less money. That extra performance is rarely needed. That doesn’t mean it’s less impressive, though.

With 350 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, the XD3 is absolutely mad, getting really close to the numbers posted by cars like the M versions of the X5 and X6. However, they also had to work the suspension to make it manageable and that’s where the problems start.

The configuration is simply kidney-crushing. You back will hurt going to the market and coming back and there’s actually no remedy for it. Sure, you’ll go around corners as if you’re driving a 3 Series Touring but while driving normally around town, your back will hurt. A lot.

Bottom line, the price difference just doesn’t justify itself.
