Alonso Would Not Fear Vettel as Teammate

Fernando Alonso would not fear a head-to-head competition against Sebastian Vettel within the Ferrari garage for the future. After recently the president of the Scuderia, Luca di Montezemolo, hinted that one day Vettel will likely wear an all-red race suit in Formula One, Alonso addressed those prospects in an interview with the media in his home town Oviedo.

The 2-time world champion has never been outscored by a teammate in his entire F1 career and doesn't plan to change anything in the future. So no matter how tough his future teammate will be – that is if Felipe Massa will be replaced by somebody at the end of the 2012 season – the Spaniard believes he has what it takes to beat him.

I'm not afraid at all of Vettel,” Alonso told the Spanish media a few days after Christmas. “Should he come to Ferrari one day it won't be a problem, I have nothing to say on that.

But I'm not afraid to face any team-mate, because I've never feared them. None of my team-mates have ever done a single point more than I have, so I don't see why I should be afraid of anyone,” he added.

The one time someone managed to score the same amount of points as Alonso in the world championship was during his tumultuous time at McLaren, back in 2007, when he sat level on points with Lewis Hamilton. The Brit ranked higher because of the higher number of podiums scored that season.

As for the upcoming campaign, Alonso admitted that he trusts his team more than ever to provide him with a car capable of battling with the Red Bulls and the McLarens from the get go.

I have no doubts that next year I will have the car I want. Ferrari has to aim for the title because of the prestige it has always had,” he added.
