The news comes the same day when the 2-time Formula One champion announced he was considering switching racing series if the championship's “big guns” eventually quitted F1 at the end of the year. With plenty of questions on the matter being asked by the French journalists, Alonso made it very clear, however, that he was not yet interested in endurance racing.
“I hope to race more than one race a year,” admitted the Renault driver, who has another year of contract – 2010 – with the French manufacturer.
He did, however, suggest, that he may have to consider changing series in order to add more titles under his belt. As argued by the Spaniard, he already proved himself in the Great Circle, and looking for another challenge in a premier racing series might not sound too bad after all.
“I am only 27 years old and have won the formula one world championship twice, so there are also other categories to win,” added Alonso.
One thing is clear, though. The Spanish driver will not compete for small-time manufacturers or wannabe teams inside F1, as he confirmed it himself.
“I don't want to drive for a small team. If the seven teams go, formula one disappears. With unknown drivers, it's over,” argued Alonso.
Also attending the Le Mans event will be Ferrari's CEO Luca di Montezemolo - who will be the official starter of the 24-hour race - and Scuderia's team principal Stefano Domenicali.
