Alonso Pins Title Hopes on Red Bull Equality

Fernando Alonso may hold the lead in the F1 overall classification for the time being, but his 11-point advantage from Red Bull's Mark Webber is not the most important aspect that makes him favorite for the world title. In fact, the Spaniard hopes more that Red Bull maintains its driver equality strategy in the remaining two rounds of the season than enjoy its points advantage.

With Mark Webber and his teammate Sebastian Vettel having fair and square chances to the world title, they will consequently score points off each other in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, which will benefit Alonso. And the Spaniard voiced his hopes in that direction in Brazil, prior to this weekend's race at Interlagos.

We are focused on ourselves and not what our rivals do,” he said, in an interview with El Pais newspaper. “But I think Horner, the director of Red Bull, has very clear ideas about equality in that team. And I hope it stays that way,” he added, putting an extra pressure on Red Bull to live up to their “no team tactics” word.

The fact that Vettel, who is 25 points behind Alonso in the standings, will be given green light to fight his teammate Webber for the title was underlined by a mocking comment made by the German racer in recent days. Asked if he will help his teammate for the F1 crown in the remaining 2 races of the season, Vettel reacted in an ironic way.

I don't go onto the track to provide first-aid to someone. I think there are enough ambulances around the circuit for that,” said the German driver. Reportedly, this comment made his teammate quite angry, which does nothing but to further worsen the relationship between the two in the Red Bull garage.
