Alonso Insists Ferrari Will Be His Last F1 Team

Not that we haven't heard this before, but Spanish driver Fernando Alonso told the media that Ferrari will definitely be his last team in Formula One. This may be the same words that Kimi Raikkonen used to spell back when he moved to Maranello from McLaren Mercedes, but now Alonso made it very clear that he means it.

This will 100 per cent be my last team. I want to finish my career with a good taste in the mouth,” said Alonso during a media conference at the Wroom event in the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort.

The 28-year old Spaniard signed a deal with the Scuderia for the upcoming 3 years of Formula One shortly after the 2009 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. However, Ferrari has the first option to further extend that deal for an additional 3 years, in case the “marriage” won't suffer any significant problems by that time.

Alonso is currently the only double world champion in the Formula One series and is expected to revive the Ferrari organization that has suffered so much during the past year. The majority of the tifosi are expecting the Spaniard to set up a winning dynasty close to the one built by Schumacher, which will likely take a bigger amount of time than the initial 3 years of contract.

If we are to take Alonso by his word, he would have to quit Formula One either at the end of 2012, or 2015.

In addition, the Spaniard insisted that he never clung to the No 1 status within any team inside Formula One, and will not do so at Ferrari either.

I never asked to be a number one driver but what I don't want is to be a number two; it happened sometimes in 2007 (at McLaren),” added Alonso, hinting at the period of time which he spent alongside Lewis Hamilton, at Woking.
