The AFS Trinity prototypes aka Extreme Hybrids promise to deliver a 90 mph highway speed and a range of 40 miles per charge while offering the outstanding aforementioned fuel consumption*.
Now about this bold figure... Here’s what the company claims. The traveling distance is based on a typical week of driving: 40 miles, 6 days per week and 100 miles on one day each week. The first 40 miles of each day are electric and gasoline power is used for longer distances. In this usage conditions the Extreme hybrid uses up to 2 gallons of gas for 340 miles traveled, so, if we do the math, that means 170 MPG. The company rounds this figure to 150 MPG in order to compensate for potentially extensive use of the pedal on the right or other conditions which might affect the car’s efficiency.
So, it’s actually 150 MPG plus charging costs only in certain driving conditions. This is why we used the “*” when describing this figure.
