As more and more safety systems become legal requirements (at least on cars), it seems that motorbikes are beginning to adopt many of the features now standard on cars, to make them a bit safer - there are even talks about motorbike airbags.
So, BMW’s Motorrad division have announced a number of changes which will be included on all its 2013 mode-year offerings, including the offering of ABS (antilock braking system) as standard, despite the EU (European Union) only requiring standard-fit ABS in 2016.
However, aside from the standard ABS, they will also be offering electronic suspension management, stability control, traction control, as well as adaptive headlight(s) - a continuation of their Safety 360º initiative.
If you want ABS as standard on your new BMW bike, you will have to wait one month before the updated models reach showrooms, and then you’re set for a much safer ride.
While some rides will definitely will not agree with the use of the other systems (which are not standard, yet!), there is no doubt that ABS is necessary and very useful, especially on low-grip surfaces which are far more dangerous for bike riders.
