560 HP 2012 BMW M5 Makes Video Debut

BMW has released the first official promo video of the new F10 M5 and it’s all about track use. Fortunately, the haven’t been all German and gone to prove it’s a few seconds faster around the Nurburgring, instead focusing around the enjoyment you get when putting the right kind of four-door sideways.

The video also demonstrated to keen M5 fans that the new twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine sounds just as awesome as the 5.0-liter V10 it has replaced. The high-revving powerhouse that’s hidden behind the double kidney grille was borrowed from the X5 M and produces an impressive 560 hp from 6,000 to 7,000rpm and a peak torque of 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) from 1,500 rpm. BMW says it has not only bumped engine output by about 10% and torque by 30% over the predecessor, but it has also cut fuel consumption by 30% to 9.9 l/100 km (23.8mpg US). What really counts here is that it has that glorious sound that would make an R8 envious.

There’s not much time left until the oversized supercar that you can use to carry your whole family makes its first public showing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Britain, and we are sure to get more exciting videos then.

Not that it counts when going sideways, but the new M5 can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.4 seconds, while another 8.6 seconds is needed to top 200 km/h (124 mph). Top speed is limited to 250km/h (155mph), which it can be lifted to 305km/h (190mph) with the aid of the optional M Driver’s package.
