Having the best sounding engines is good, but having the fastest cars in their segment is even better, which is why the Germans are pulling a 180 on us just a few months after their first AWD no-SUV models were launched.
For years, AMG shied away from using all-wheel drive, but now AMG CEO Tobias Moers says it will be their mainstay.
Speaking to journalists from Motoring at a Willow Springs track event, Moers said “We have certain markets where we have both cars [rear and all-wheel drive E63 AMGs] available… and the take rate is more than 90 percent [all-wheel drive]. So we get our answer out of the customers.”
There are cars that will continue to be safe from all-wheel drive. Moers says there "is still room for rear-wheel driven cars [in our range]", referring to supersport cars.
Currently, the SLK, SLS and SL are not offered with 4Matic and will likely continue this way for the foreseeable future.
