In case you thought that longitudinal engines are fairly new, you are fairly wrong: they've been around for more than 100 years, and this 199 Pierce motorcycle is one of the nicest proofs around.
The first Pierce motorcycles have been manufactured back in 1907 and production lasted for 7 years, when George N. Pierce went bankrupt. However, his bikes won a lot of local races and were capable of reaching as much as 60 mph (96.5 km/h).

The bike in the pictures after the jump is a4-inline longitudinal model, boasting a whopping 700cc displacement and delivering 4 bhp. With more than 90 years spent in storage, the 1911 Pierce has never been restored or painted and is still in working condition.

It also sports a 2-speed transmission and pedals, backing the main shaft drive. It will go under the hammer in the 22nd Annual Copake Antique & Classic Bicycle Auction on April 20th, 2013 in Copake, New York, for an unknown strting price.
