Earlier this year, BMW unveiled its newest engine, a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter unit that will definitely be used on a wide array of new models starting with later this year. When we saw it, it was fitted on a BMW 1 Series but later on, the Bavarian company explained the technology behind it and we were amazed.
According to the BMW M division Director, we might even see this engine on future M cars as it has the capacity to deliver over 200 HP/liter with a turbocharger. That is one impressive unit.

Seeing how the general audience received this engine, Daimler decided it was maybe time to look into a baby-six unit for their own cars. In this regard they started exchanging information with Ford to see what's what.

Automotive News Europe claims that Daimler got a closer look at Ford's award-winning 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine in exchange for details regarding stratified lean-burning power plants. After this interesting move, Daimler went on to develop its own 3-cylinder engine with Renault-Nissan for the next-generation Smart ForTwo.

"It's a very interesting and impressive engine. We have had some discussions with Ford engineers about this engine,"  engine development director Roland Kemmler of Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz told Automotive News Europe when asked about Ford's powerplant.

However, since the capacity seems limiter to under 1-liter we can't see this new development as a threat to BMW's own baby-six. Furthermore, the Bimmer unit is developed from the already legendary N55 unit and catching up with it will take more than just negotiating with the French.
