A fresh report on the all-new Land Cruiser Prado confirms our worries that four-cylinder engines are in store for the 250 series. The Prado jumped from 150 series to 250 series in the span of a whopping 14 years, which isn't exactly surprising due to the newcomer's platform.
Toyota introduced the Toyota New Global Architecture in 2015. Body-on-frame vehicles feature the TNGA-F version, with F standing for frame. The first application of the F came in the form of the Land Cruiser 300, the big one that previously featured V8 muscle. The 300 offers three mills, depending on the market: 4.0-liter NA V6, 3.4-liter TT V6, or 3.3-liter TT V6 diesel.
Other F-based production vehicles include the Lexus LX, GX, Toyota Tundra, Tacoma, and Sequoia. The 4Runner is also getting this platform. Toyota will position the 4Runner below the Prado, which is believed to bear the Land Cruiser handle in the US and Canada.
Certain F-based trucks and SUVs come with either six- or four-cylinder hybrid powertrains. The Prado is likely getting a hybrid too, although with four cylinders rather than six. Drive Australia learned that a total of three powerplants are in the offing, starting with the 2TR-FE. The least powerful engine is a naturally-aspirated 2.7 that puts out 122 kW (164 hp) at 5,200 revolutions per minute and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) at 4,000 revolutions per minute in the Hilux Workmate.
The Prado's engine lineup continues with the 1GD-FTV, a 2.8-liter turbo diesel I4 that offers a thermal efficiency of 44 percent. In the Hilux pickup truck, which is twinned with the 2023-and-earlier Tacoma, this lump develops 150 kW (201 hp) at 3,400 revolutions per minute and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) at 1,600 revolutions per minute. And yes, it can be had with a manual!
As for the final entry, look forward to a 2.4-liter turbo I4. Codenamed L4T, said engine cranks out 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet (420 Nm) in the Highlander. There is a high possibility of a hybrid 2.4 for the Land Cruiser in America, where the Tacoma is available with said powertrain. The i-FORCE MAX makes 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet (630 Nm), which is more than adequate for the 250 series.
The cited motoring publication has also learned that series production of the all-new Prado will start in November 2023. In other words, the 250 should premiere in late summer or early fall. Markets like Europe will get their 250s in early 2024, whereas the US market will get the Land Cruiser as a 2025 model.
Obviously enough, the Land Cruiser will serve as the GX's more affordable brother in this part of the world. The Lexus-branded sibling is coming in early 2024 with a 3.4-liter TT V6 packing 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet (650 Nm). A hybrid four-cylinder turbo – presumably the 2024 Toyota Tacoma's i-FORCE MAX setup – will become available later.
