Similar to the 4 Series, the M4 has also been treated to a mid-cycle refresh. The 2025 model year brings forth a plethora of small changes that make a tremendous difference, including 20 additional ponies from the M4 Competition xDrive's engine.
Boasting the B58-derived S58 twin-turbo sixer, the 2025 BMW M4 comes in three states of tune. For the base version, which is rear-wheel drive and retains the six-speed manual transmission of the pre-facelift M4, BMW quotes 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet in the US market. Over in Europe, the output numbers are 480 ps and 550 Nm of twist.

The next level up is the automatic-only Competition. It belts out a tremendous 503 horsepower (510 ps) and 479 pound-feet (650 Nm). It boggles the mind that a sub-$100,000 car from BMW develops more power and torque than a Lamborghini Diablo, but then again, remember that the V12-powered icon rolled out back in 1990.

At the very top of the range, the M4 Competition xDrive has been updated to 523 horsepower (530 ps) and the same kind of torque as the M4 Competition. The Munich-based automaker advertises the M4 Competition xDrive with a 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds, four tenths quicker than the rear-wheel-drive M4 Competition. The manual-equipped M4, by comparison, needs 4.1 clicks.

Regarding top speed, the M4 is limited to 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour). The only way to raise this limit without losing the warranty is to specify the M Driver's Package, which raises the top speed to 174 miles per hour (280 kilometers per hour) for the convertible and 180 miles per hour (290 kilometers per hour) for the hardtop sibling.

From the standpoint of exterior design, the new LED headlights and Laserlight-accented LED taillights help the Life Cycle Impulse stand out from the 2024 model. The Laserlight moniker refers to laser diodes that illuminate glass fiber bundles to create a three-dimensional effect. A bit unnecessary and tremendously expensive to replace if damaged, but anyhow, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

BMW also revamped the front and rear bumpers, although more functional improvements can be found inside. A new flat-bottom steering wheel opens the list of differences over 2024 and earlier models, along with dark graphite matte-finish standard trim, optional polished aluminum trim, a finer grain of Sensatec synthetic leather dashboard upholstery, as well as BMW Operating System 8.5 for the 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

M-specific graphics also need to be mentioned, along with a revised interface for the HVAC system. The M4 ships as standard with three-zone automatic climate control. BMW says that the fan speed, temperature setting, seat heating, and steering wheel heating functions can be controlled by touch control or by voice control. BMW Live Cockpit Professional is also standard. It includes a head-up display and the BMW Maps cloud-based satellite navigation system.

Just like the M440i and lesser versions of the 4er, the mid-cycle refresh of the M4 will become available in March 2024. Come July 2024, the M4 CS will enter production as the two-door successor of the M3 CS. You can also think of it as being a less extreme take on the M4 CSL, for the M4 CS features all-wheel drive. The M xDrive system comes with a RWD setting, meaning that you will be able to kick the tail out whenever you feel like it.
