The Rolls-Royce of electric vehicles just got hit with its first recall. A little over 100 examples of the Spectre have been recalled in the United States market due to potential adhesive residue on the ground connection cable connector eyelet. Said residue may result in unwanted electrical resistance and further cause an insufficient ground connection.
The ground connection cable connects the front drive unit to the vehicle chassis. BMW of North America informed the federal watchdog of two potential risks. Firstly, the service technician may be injured in case of a short circuit. The worst-case scenario would be a thermal event, which isn't pretty in a vehicle equipped with a high-voltage battery.

A Rolls-Royce retailer discovered the aforementioned condition on December 20 last year, during a pre-delivery inspection. A stop delivery order was issued on January 11, and six days later, BMW of North America decided to inspected all potentially affected vehicles for extra peace of mind. To date, BMW-owned Rolls-Royce is aware of zero incidents – or worse – related to the condition.

LEONI AG of Nuremberg, Germany supplied the suspect component, which bears part number 61 29 5A66D97 in the automaker's parts system. Suspect vehicles were manufactured in the period between October 24, 2023 and December 11, 2023 at the Goodwood assembly plant in the United Kingdom.

Dealers nationwide will be informed about this recall on February 1. Owner notifications will be mailed via first-class mail on March 15. Knowing the British manufacturer, owners may have already been informed by their respective R-R dealerships. Regarding the remedy, service technicians will inspect the eyelet at the end of the cable (which attaches to the front electric motor) for adhesive residue. If necessary, excess adhesive will be carefully removed prior to reconnecting the ground cable.

Based on the Architecture of Luxury aluminum-intensive platform of the Ghost, Cullinan, and Phantom, the Spectre is Rolls-Royce's first battery-electric vehicle. Revealed in October 2022 with a starting price of $413,000 in the US market, the Spectre boasted no fewer than 300 orders at the moment of its unveiling in this part of the world.

Its battery is listed with a capacity of 102 kilowatt hours. R-R says that lithium and cobalt are sourced from strictly controlled sources in Australia, Argentina, and Morocco. The cells are produced with green electricity, and Rolls-Royce tested this battery in temperatures ranging from -40° C to 50° C before giving it the OK for production. In Fahrenheit, that would be -40 to 122 degrees.

Tipping the scales at 2,890 kilograms (6,371 pounds), the Spectre is minutely smaller than the entry-level Ghost in both overall length and wheelbase. Its dual-motor setup is rated at 430 kW and 900 Nm, meaning 576 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) takes 4.4 seconds, and WLTP range is estimated at 530 kilometers (329 miles). By comparison, the EPA range is 291 mi (468 km).

It should be noted that the current Ghost, Cullinan, and Phantom are Rolls-Royce's final internal combustion vehicles. The ultra-luxury marque intends to switch to electric-only muscle after 2030, meaning that the Spectre coupe will be joined at some point in the coming years by at least one zero-emission sedan and one zero-emission SUV.
