As always, the latest BMW has leaked on the internet - either intentionally or not. Well, it doesn't matter, as the cat is now almost out of the bag. Or should we say the cat is out of the big trunk since this is the i5 Touring station wagon we are discussing?
The BMW 5 Series executive car has been around with this nameplate since 1972 and has currently reached its eighth iteration. The original succeeded the 'New Class' sedans – a moniker that is set to make a comeback soon with a completely new design style and lots of sustainable powertrains. Meanwhile, the latest generation of the 5 Series was presented in 2023 based on the latest evolution of the brand's CLAR platform shared with the latest 7 Series.

Luckily, the eighth 5 Series is not as controversial in terms of design – although not everyone is happy about its styling, either. Presented in May 2023, the new 5 Series also has a zero-emissions version called i5 for the first time. Actually, it was the first one shown to the public, even before the ICE-powered and PHEV ones, and consists of three models – the base eDrive40, the xDrive all-wheel drive model, and the flagship M60 xDrive.

More than half a year later, BMW is now busy preparing for the arrival of the G60 saloon's more practical sibling, the G61 station wagon. Everyone and their mother know the estate will arrive with about the same options as the saloon – gasoline and diesel mild hybrids, PHEV, and fully electric. Further down the line, there will also be a BMW M5 saloon and M5 Touring, as per teasers from the company's M division. Until then, of course, BMW wants to put the spotlight on the regular Touring.

The station wagon models haven't been with the 5 Series from the beginning, with the first generation appearing alongside the E34 back in 1990, which was the first iteration to offer an estate body style, AWD, or a V8 engine. The subsequent variants all carried at least the sedan and wagon body styles, in addition to other variants. Now, an estate 5 Series is a given, and the actual premiere is the arrival of the first-ever all-electric i5 Touring.

Well, maybe it wasn't supposed to perspire right now, or BMW willingly allowed the 'leak,' but we now have an excellent first look at the design of the 2024 i5 Touring. The executive station wagon was caught during what looks like an official photo shoot in a subtle gray-green shade with the i5 Touring xDrive40 branding on the liftgate. It's all over the regular sources of automotive leaks, and of course, enthusiasts have some pretty strong opinions regarding the looks of the 5 Series station wagon. It's a mixed opinion, to say the least…
