Audi says the SQ8 e-tron will inject "more performance into the brand's sophisticated and seamless flagship luxury electric SUV." We say: bring it on! (Especially because it's much more affordable than in other parts of the world).
Not to be confused with the regular Audi SQ8 that still relies on gasoline power and V8 oomph to achieve its high-performance duties (4.0-liter TFSI, 500 hp, 60 mph/96 kph in 4.1 seconds and 155 mph/250 kph top speed), the 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron is the sporty version of the battery-powered electric mid-size luxury crossover produced by Audi since 2019 and formerly known as the Audi e-tron.
Following this year's rebranding, the series (along with the Sportback coupe-style version) was refreshed across the board and integrated into the Q8 model nomenclature because the Germans want the e-tron to serve as the overarching EV branding just like BMW i and Mercedes EQ do for their main rivals (or IQ does for Cadillac, over in America).
Anyway, the 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron arrives a little late on the US market, considering that the Ingolstadt-based carmaker opened the order books for the version in May in the United Kingdom. However, no one really wants to remember the prices, which range from £97,500 to £117k! That's an astonishing $123,717 to over $148k! And here we are, still stunned at what inflation does to some countries…
In the United States, things look pretty darn 'cheap' in comparison. More precisely, the 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron is set to arrive at nationwide dealerships during the fourth quarter of the year from $89,800 and $92,600 in case you want the less practical but allegedly more stylish 2024 SQ8 Sportback e-tron. Both feature the same powertrain, anyway, so it's your choice to pay extra cash – plus the destination and the rest of the charges.
As for the oomph, it looks decidedly sporty, even if we are dealing with a crossover SUV behemoth – the addition of a second rear drive motor amounts to a three-motor configuration with 496 hp and 718 lb.-ft. (973 Nm) of torque in boost mode, and it's all complete with intelligent torque vectoring that combines with the company's iconic quattro all-wheel drive system. In total, this format delivers an additional 94 electric ponies on top of the 2024 Q8 e-tron.
According to Audi, the US-spec version is ready to sprint to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds and to 62 mph (100 kph) in 4.6 seconds. Naturally, the SQ8 e-trons add distinctive S styling across the board – wider fender flares, standard 20-inch or optional 22-inch titanium-finished alloy wheels, aluminum-look details on the outside, plus six-piston red brake calipers, and more.
Inside, the two electric models get Valcona leather-wrapped 12-way adjustable power seats with S logos, a Carbon square trim, plus contrast diamond stitching in Black, Rotor Gray, and Arras Red.
