Even though the first generation of the 2 Series Active Tourer has been a runaway hit in Europe, BMW was rumored to be changing priorities and concentrate more on crossovers than MPVs, with a replacement of the compact minivan seeming unlikely at one point.
It turns out all those rumors were phooey all along because as early as 2019 we got our first look at the second generation of the MPV during testing.

Always to be remembered as the first-ever production BMW based on a front-wheel-drive platform with transverse engines, the 2 Series Active Tourer has also spawned the longer and more accommodating 2 Series Gran Tourer.

Sales are still going well, but since its main rival and the reason for its existence, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, has already been renewed, BMW is not sitting still and is currently working on a completely revamped model.

The latest pre-production prototypes of the second-generation 2 Series Active Tourer have started to lose a lot of camouflage, giving a better view of the intricate character lines and the massive kidney grille. The latter makes the car look hungry for children and small animals when viewed from up front.

Incidentally, and despite its rather compact exterior size, the model can accommodate a decently sized family and its pets inside its belly, thanks to the clever use of space.

Based on the newest iteration of the UKL2 platform, which is shared with cars like the latest 1 Series and MINIs, the 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will feature the latest infotainment upgrades brought by iDrive 7, not to mention an increase in overall comfort and performance.

Speaking of which, the engine lineup will largely remain the same, with an assortment of three- and four-cylinder mills in both gasoline and diesel guise, but with a bigger accent put on 48-volt mild-hybrid electrification across the board.

The plug-in hybrid version will also make a return, this time with a slightly larger battery and hopefully a better-developed ‘hybrid’ mode.

Set to be unveiled officially either at the end of this year or in early 2022, the second-generation 2 Series Active Tourer should be followed shortly by its seven-seat Gran Tourer as well - unless rumors about the latter variant's demise turn out to be accurate.
