About a week after Renault announced a brand new engine range for the Espace, as well as the other larger models, this beautiful French SUV was spied near the Arctic.
Usually, carmakers launch new engines together with a mid-life facelift, but European automakers were under such pressure from new emissions regulations that Bentley says it very nearly went out of business.
The camo tells us where Renault wants to make cosmetic changes: the front and rear ends. We can also spot a very impressive LED headlight projector unit which puts some luxury car designs to shame. But you could just look at the Kadjar facelift and have a pretty good impression of what's going on here.
Which brings us to a very important point, which is that Renault doesn't have a very clear strategy. It hasn't given up on MPVs yet, but the design of the Espace is more like a 4x4.
We suspect that the budget for this facelift won't be huge, Inside, expect nothing more than a new infotainment system which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
So what are these new engines we're talking about? Well, there's a 2.0-liter diesel, which Renault hasn't offered in many years. The high-output version will enter production next year and offer the Espace a maximum of 200 HP and 400 Nm. There's also a 160 HP, 360 Nm version that replaces the 1.6 dCi bi-turbo.
The TCe 225, a 1.8-liter has already replaced the 1.6-liter 200 HP unit. However, Renault has also fitted this with GPF technology that brings it in line with the new regulations. At the bottom of the range, we're likely to see the new 1.7-liter diesel with around 150 HP. The automaker might also introduce the 1.3-liter TCe turbo, but there's no way to know for sure until the reveal.
We expect to see the Espace facelift around the Frankfurt Motor Show next fall.
