The BMW X6 might be the original SUV with the silhouette of a coupe, but as far as the build quality and luxuriousness of the interior are concerned, the GLE Coupe is one step ahead. The C167 is new from the ground up for the 2020 model year, and for the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, the three-pointed star decided to exhibit a 400 d while AMG went forward with a 53.
Unveiled online at the end of August 2019, the GLE Coupe looks even better in the flesh. It’s also a bit more appealing up front as opposed to the oversized kidney grille of the X6, but at the rear, the egg-like theme continues and it’s not exactly pretty nor worse than before. Given the success of the previous generation, this stylistic hiccup might grow on Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts with time.
400 d in 4Matic flavor is the most potent turbo diesel available for the GLE Coupe, a 3.0-liter turbo straight-six engine that churns out 330 PS at 3,600 through 4,000 rpm. Torque is rated at 700 Nm, a lot for a vehicle of this size and sufficient for every driving scenario. Peak torque is developed from low down in the rev range at 1,200 rpm, all the way through 3,200 revolutions.
At the other end of the spectrum, the 53 will have to suffice for the time being. While the 63 series will introduce the AMG twin-turbo V8 to the lineup, the 53 relies on a straight-six turbo engine with 435 PS and 520 Nm. These numbers translate to 5.3 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph) and up to 250 km/h (155 mph) on derestricted parts of the Autobahn in Germany.
As mentioned beforehand, the interior truly stands out in this segment of luxury utility vehicles. The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system and dual-screen layout only add to the specialness of the GLE Coupe, and even the rear passengers are treated to a lot of legroom.
Pricing information, you ask? That’s not available for the time being, but the coupe is certain to add a few thousand euros over the GLE-Class with seating for up to seven people. The V167 starts in Germany from 66,937 euros, money that get you the 300 d 4Matic. The 400 d 4Matic retails at 77,231 euros while the 53 4Matic+ is 85,501 euros.
