Check out the G80 Sport, what we believe to be the most appealing Genesis model yet and a likely thorn in the side of the Infiniti Q50 sedan. What's more, it's got a twin-turbo V6 engine, just like all the cool kids right now.
From the Porsche Panamera 4S to the Mercedes-AMG C43 and the Audi S4, nearly every popular German sedan has a V6 engine with forced induction. The G80 Sport has that too, but without all that fly-by-wire steering BS from the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport.
The G80 Sport is meant to slot between the regular V6 model and the V8 flagship. But there's a chance it will put the latter out of business. Behind its re-shaped grille is the new 3.3-liter twin-turbo engine developed by the Kia-Hyundai conglomerate.
Shown here in U.S.-spec form, it develops a respectable 365 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 376 lb-ft between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm. So that's about 55 hp less, but almost the same torque as the V8 produces at 5,000 freaking rpm.
This new engine is paired with a quicker-shifting version of the 8-speed automatic installed on the V8. Korean engineers also installed bigger rear brakes for more stopping power.
The new body kit for the Sport model is in line with the recent design trends. A black grille surround is paired with a new mesh, while the side air intakes look like smaller versions of the ones on the Audi RS7. Around the back, they've tweaked the taillights and installed a supposedly throaty four-tip exhaust system.
Besides the multi-spoke wheels, two colors are exclusive to the 3.3T Sport, named Polar Ice and Sevilla Red, which are available in addition to Casablanca White, Caspian Black, and Himalayan Gray.
Inside, the sedan has aluminum pedals, thicker steering wheel, sports seats with contrast stitching in either black or gray leather, and a black microfiber suede headliner. The carbon fiber trim is supposedly the real deal, but we don't have any photos of it yet.
The G80 Sport will be launched as a 2018 model year car next Spring. As you can see from the photo gallery below, there are changes to the regular 2018 G80 as well.
