The next chapter in the Mercedes-AMG story will be written with the top down [no pun or innuendo intended]. Slated to debut early in 2017, the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster has been recently caught testing back-to-back with its arch-nemesis, the timeless Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet.
It’s hard to tell whether this 911 Cabriolet is a run-of-the-mill Carrera or a Carrera S considering that the sports exhaust is an optional extra on both models, but nevertheless, the GT Roadster will try its best to steal customers from the Zuffenhausen yardstick. So, what’s on the menu and if the GT Roadster a worthy challenger to the status quo? Well, a lot and hell yes!
As you can see from the two pics sent by our spy photographers, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster prides itself on a rag top that harks back to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Roadster. Even the outline of the boot lid and the third brake light remind of the old geezer. Overall, this is definitely a super sexy ragtop.
As far as the interior is concerned, the metamorphosis from fixed-head coupe to canvas top roadster will add two overriding features: a button with the sole purpose of folding or raising the textile roof, as well as the Airscarf neck-level heating system integrated into the headrests. If the belly of the beast interests you most, I’m much obliged to tell you the roadster will perfectly mirror the powertrain of its hardtop sibling.
The name of the game here is the Mercedes-AMG-developed M178 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 blunderbuss. Two tunes will be available for the GT Roadster: 462 PS and 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) of torque for the garden variety genre or 510 PS and 650 Nm (479.4 lb-ft) of get-up-and-go for the S model. Having said that, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster is expected to debut in Detroit or Geneva and arrive in the United States of America as a 2018 model year.
