Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster Coming in 2017, One More Road-Going Variant is Due

When you think about, the Mercedes-AMG trade name became official at the end of Anno Domini 2014. That year, it was announced that road-going AMG models would be called Mercedes-AMG. The GT, however, is how the sub-brand established itself.
Introduced in September 2014 in Mercedes-AMG GT and Mercedes-AMG GT S form, the German sports car is one of the hottest exotica around. The way it looks, the twin-turbo V8 with hot inside V configuration, the performance available at the gentle tap of your right foot, there’s much to like about this thing. The recently presented Mercedes-AMG GT R is even more likable, albeit it’s more of a handful on the raggedy edge.

The German manufacturer won’t stop here, though. It was known ever since the GT came out that a rag top was on the menu, although nobody had confirmation for the model. Thankfully, though, an Instagram user snapped a pic of the thing in pre-production form, confirming that the GT Roadster is incoming.

Speaking to AutoExpress, AMG head honcho Tobias Moers came clean about the future of the Mercedes-AMG GT family. “The convertible has moved well beyond the drawing board,” Moers declared. “It will be the next AMG GT model to arrive.” The decision to go with a soft top wasn’t made just to keep weight down.

If Mercedes-AMG were to use a folding hardtop for the GT Roadster, have you ever thought what would happen to the SL? In a paradoxical turn of events, the GT (for Grand Tourer) is the de facto sports car of Daimler AG at the present moment, while the SL (for Sport Lightweight) is the grand tourer. Stupid, isn't it?

Moers told the publication that 2017 is when the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster will be presented to the public. As my colleague explained in a previous story about the GT Roadster, the Detroit Auto Show or the Geneva Motor Show are the most likely venues where the fourth member of the GT family will come undone.

Following the debut of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster, the German automaker will continue its assault with at least one more road-going variant of the GT. The car in question is expected to be an even more ludicrous machine than the GT R, a machine worthy of the Black Series moniker. Before the ultimate variant of the GT comes to play, Mercedes-AMG is slated to roll out a GT4 customer racing car.
