Mercedes-AMG is expected to move the goal post even further with the next generation of the E63, but until that time arrives, engineers are still busy testing pre-production versions of the model.
Sadly, testing comes with its ups and downs in almost equal measure, and the two engineers in charge of the camouflaged E63 in the adjacent images became stranded near a roundabout in Germany when their car stopped and refused to start again.

Thankfully, a couple of calls back to Affalterbach got them all the information they needed to restart the vehicle and get on with their testing. Meanwhile, our spy photographers were in the right place and at the right time, managing to shoot the new E63 from every angle.

The two most important details in the resulting images are the 330 km/h (205 mph) speedometer and the amount of black plastic found under the hood. Actually, strike that, because what's underneath that sea of plastic is the most significant bit.

Just like the current generation of the E63, the W213 will have two power levels for its twin-turbocharged engine, only, this time, we're talking about a 4.0-liter V8 instead of a 5.5-liter. Derived from the same mill used by the Mercedes-AMG C63 and the GT, the powerplant used by the 2017 E63 will take things up a notch when it comes to power output.

The standard E63 is said to feature 571 PS (563 HP) and 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) of torque, while the bonkers E63 S will output no less than 612 PS (604 HP) and a tire-torturing 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque.

All that oomph will be sent through a multi-clutch version of the 9G-Tronic to all four wheels, thus diminishing 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) figures to modern supercar territory. The Mercedes-AMG E63 should hit 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds while the E63 S will hit the same speed in a staggering 3.4 seconds, thus becoming the quickest production AMG in history.

Not yet confirmed, but it looks like Mercedes-AMG will also switch from 4Matic to a different nomenclature for its future models, with the 2016 E63 being the first to receive a new moniker for its all-wheel-drive system.
