The new, sixth generation Hyundai Elantra made its world debut a few months ago on the South Korean market, but the American version comes with a few tweaks.
One of the key features of the new Hyundai Elantra is its impressive safety features, offering segment-first technologies that should enable it to receive the Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a five-star Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Of course, while the integrity of its occupants is a top priority, the new Elantra also comes with other selling points, one of which is its exterior design. The new aggressive hexagonal grille specific to the new Hyundai models is present, accentuating the equally menacing headlights with Dynamic Bending Lights and a vertical LED strip for an unmistakeable visual signature.

The side profile continues the sculptural direction of the front end and presents premium features such as LED door handle lights, side mirror LED turn indicators - you get the picture, plenty of LEDs, including the taillights - and can be equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels.

Compared to the previous model, the new Hyundai Elantra has grown a little in length (0.8 inches) and a little more in width (one full inch), but other than that its dimensions remain the same, most notably being the 106.3-inch (2,700 mm) wheelbase.

On the inside, the new Elantra comes with plenty of space and high-quality materials. Its seats are made out of SoyFoam, an environmentally friendly material obtained out of soybean oil that substitutes the usual foam based on petroleum. The interior also gets lower-level noise perturbances thanks to a very liberal approach to the use of soundproofing material.

As you would expect, multimedia and connectivity were high on Hyundai’s agenda, the new Elantra coming with either a 7.0-inch or an 8.0-inch touchscreen display for its Android Auto-compatible infotainment system.

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra gets two all-new powertrains designed for improved fuel efficiency, but without sacrificing performances. The starting point for the new Elantra is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine developing 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, with an estimated fuel economy of 29 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined. This engine comes with the choice of two six-speed transmissions, one manual and the other automatic.

The second engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged unit with 128 hp and 156 lb-ft that can be mated to the new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. All Elantras get stiffer chassis without any penalty in weight, so handling shouldn’t be affected in any way.

Have a look at the press release below for more info on the new car. The exact prices haven’t been revealed yet, but we do know the 2017 Elantra will be hitting the North American Hyundai dealers in January next year.
