The 2016 version of the Lexus IS was unveiled today and, to nobody’s surprise, it looks exactly the same. While we did expect the car’s design to be untouched, we didn’t foresee the two new engine options on the table.
Now there’s a new turbocharged unit that basically introduces the Lexus IS to the 21st century. It’s a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged plant that will be found under the IS 200t moniker. Making 241 HP and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque, it will be available only with rear-wheel drive and an automatic 8-speed transmission.
Of course, variable valve timing and an ability to switch between the Otto and Atkinson cycles was included, as it seems to be the tradition over at Toyota and Lexus.
The next new engine is a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 found on the IS 300 AWD that makes 255 HP and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. This one can only be had with all-wheel drive and an automatic 6-speed transmission and we’re guessing it’s not going to be very popular considering the specs of the 200t.
However, the range is completed by the IS 350 model that was kept along basically unchanged. It uses the same engine as the IS 300 but making 306 HP and 277 lb-ft (375 Nm) of torque. This one is available with both all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive but with an 8-speed SPDS (Sport Direct Shift) automatic transmission.
The one package to get will still be the F Sport that now comes with 18” wheels and a special suspension tuning along with an intake sound that accentuates the aural experience.
