It seems like our initial info that next year’s Gumball 3000 Rally will take place in Japan was wrong. As per the man himself, Max Cooper, next year’s race will go from Dublin to Istanbul, covering Europe alone this time, leaving all other continents to the side.
The news came just after this year’s edition was over and made a lot of people cheer in excitement. Why? Various reasons, we guess. The thing is, it all depends on the route the team chooses.

Nothing’s been set in stone just yet as a couple of details have to be set up first, such as the exact roads people will be driving on. According to our info, some inspectors will be sent out through Europe to make sure everyone will not only get to see some breathtaking scenery but also make it to Istanbul and back with their cars in one piece.

One potential route could go through Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and then Turkey but the trouble with that road is Germany that isn’t all that keen on having Gumballers on its roads.

As we learned this year, they are not going to let all those thousand horsepower beasts roam free on their unrestricted Autobahns. During our short stay in Germany this year we were separated in convoys made up of ten cars, each with a Safety Car in front that you couldn’t overtake. The speed they were doing was around 75 mph (120 km/h), and they left us the impression that they simply wanted us to be late for the Amsterdam Arena show.

Leaving that aside, driving through Romania would definitely be a treat for the participants as the Eastern European country is supposed to be home to the world’s best driving road... in the world, if we’re to believe Top Gear. The guys did a special on the Transfagarasan Highway back in 2009 claiming that it’s simply the best in the world.

What they didn’t know back then is that the country has yet another, even more twisted and higher road a couple of miles away called the Transalpina Highway. That’s the highest road in Romania and could be a part of the trip as well.

Another route could avoid Germany and go through southern Europe. Honestly, after witnessing first-hand the animosities in Germany, I think that’s going to be Max’s choice. That means Gumballers would go through France, Sweden/Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece and then Turkey.

That would take the cars closer to the Adriatic Sea and other breathtaking scenery, but it could be a headache to set up due to legal issues as most of these countries are not part of the EU and crossing them might require all sorts of additional paperwork.

Either way, it’s going to be a blast no matter the roads they choose as the Gumball family knows how to have fun everywhere they go!
