Developed as a global product from the get-go, the first-generation Chevrolet Cruze replaced the recall-worthy Cobalt in 2008. That’s 7 years ago, which is why GM is prepping to debut the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze later this month. On June 24th, all will be revealed to the public.
What, the Chevy bowtie looks strange in the teaser pic above? Well, teasing half of the front fascia design was not enough, so we mirrored the obscured half and voilà! Looks may be subjective, but the second-gen Cruze has presence. Blending aesthetic cues from the 2016 Chevrolet Volt + retaining most of the first-gen Cruze’s frowny face = this handsome fellow here.
Being a compact car, the Chevrolet Cruze sells like hot cakes. Sold in 115 countries, worldwide sales got well beyond the 3.5 million units mark. Top markets around the world are China, the U. S. of A., Brazil and Canada. In 2014 alone, Stateside sales totaled 273,060 examples, a 10 percent increase over 2013.
“When we introduced the Cruze it replaced 15 other compact vehicles around the globe,” explains Alan Batey, president of General Motors North America and global Chevrolet brand chief. “By consolidating design, engineering and marketing efforts, we were able to produce an award-winning, value-driven sedan that won over customers around the world.”
The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has the right stuff to continue the winning streak. Aside from the teaser pic, the golden bowtie tells us that the 2016 Cruze will be a wee bit different from the model that debuted in China.
Visual-wise that can be seen best when analyzing the front fascia design. Still, both are underpinned by the D2XX vehicle architecture. Large yet lighter than the current model, the US-bound Cruze will introduce new technologies like infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Chevy also tells that “new powertrains and additional available safety features” are added to the mix to “bring a higher level of sophistication to the compact car segment.” When the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will hit US dealerships early next year, more than 95 percent of Chevy US product lineup will be less than 3 years old.
