On May 16th, the sixth-generation Camaro made its live debut in Detroit, and the reception was great. No wonder though - the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is better looking and more powerful than the outgoing fifth-gen model. So when do the ordering books open? August 13th, 2015 is the day we’re waiting for if we’re to believe an anonymous tipster.
The CamaroNews team states that its tipping “source was anonymous but stated that order banks would be open sometime on 8/13/15,” with possible production to start on August 22nd. In the absence of official intel from General Motors, we recommend taking this with a grain of salt. A substantial grain of salt, to be frank.
On the other hand, pilot production for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is up and running at the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly plant. An official statement from the automaker tells that 500 jobs will be added to Lansing Grand River “late this summer,” aka the month of August, to meet future demand for the Camaro.
For what it’s worth, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro playbook tells that V6 and V8 production begins in Q4 2015 while 2-liter turbo four-banger production is slated for the first quarter of 2016.
As such, the rumored production is off by more than a month. Our guess is late October, a month before fifth-gen production ends at the Oshawa plant in Canada. To boot, the playbook also states that ordering begins in Q3 2015, the same timeframe that’ll see the announcement of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro’s price.
To wrap things up nicely, autoevolution’s estimate is September for the order banks and pricing, followed by production starting in October. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 2.0 Turbo will cost $24,700 like the fifth-gen’s entry-level V6 model.
Better still, it would be interesting for the 2-Oh to cost less than the $23,800 2016MY Ford Mustang V6...
