The wait is finally over, ladies and gents - here is the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro! It's a fine machine visual-wise, isn't it? So what makes the #CamaroSix such a game changer compared to its venerable predecessor? Let us go through the intel and find that out.
For the 2016 Camaro, the initial engine lineup looks like this: 2-liter LTG turbo four-cylinder (275 HP/205 kW and 295 lb-ft/400 Nm), 3.6-liter LGX naturally aspirated V6 (335 HP/250 kW and 284 lb-ft/385 Nm) and the 6.2-liter LT1 small-block V8 from the C7 Corvette, with the latter rated 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 455 lb-ft (617 Nm). Mustang GT what now?
All 2016 Chevrolet Camaro engines are available with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic (Hydra-Matic 8L45 on the 4 and 6-cylinder, 8L90 on the V8). Depending on the model, vehicle mass has been reduced by up to 200 pounds (90.7 kilos) thanks to the GM Alpha platform. Look forward to just over 3,000 lbs (1,360 kg) in base trim. Although two Cadillac models employ the same rigid yet lightweight vehicle architecture, the Camaro's Alpha platform boasts 70 percent unique components, engineered for better performance before all else.
“Redesigning the Camaro is thrilling and challenging all at once, but the secret is to offer something more,” declared Mark Reuss, General Motors executive VP of Product Development. “For Camaro enthusiasts, it retains iconic design cues and offers even more performance. For a new generation of buyers, the 2016 Camaro incorporates our most innovative engineering ideas with finely honed performance and leading design.”
On the technological front, engineers gave the sixth-gen Camaro an all-new Drive Mode Selector that employs four operating modes: Snow/Ice (if you live in Chicago), Tour, Sport and a Track setting exclusive to the Camaro SS. Inside there are two 8-inch diagonal screens and an Interior Spectrum Lighting feature that offers 24 different ambient lighting effects. 10 exterior colors and 5 interior color combos are available.
As we expected since late 2014, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is slated to start assembly at GM's Lansing Grand River Plant in Michigan later this year, with first deliveries slated for late 2015. More intel on the 2016 Camaro, including the SS' Magnetic Ride Control suspension and many more data, can be found below.
