BMW relit the 6 Series name back in 2003 after a 14-year long hiatus. However, in the 12 years that passed since then, we saw two generations unfold before our eyes and a brand new model being introduced in the range. That new version just received a facelift along with the Coupe and Convertible, so we had to write a full review of the 2016 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.
The first things you notice of the new 6 Series range will be the same on every model, no matter of the body style. That’s because the front fascia design is the same on all of them, up to the A-pillar. On the 2016 model year versions, that design now features sharper lines, from the headlights (that are also sleeker than before) to the kidney grilles that are just intruding into your space when viewed head on.

Since we’re discussing exterior details, we should also mention that our tester came painted in BMW’s Frozen Brilliant White Metallic paint, an Individual option that costs $3,600 in the US and €5,000 in Europe. Is it worth it?

If you’re looking to draw attention to yourself and your car, absolutely. Everywhere we went this Gran Coupe drew the attention of everyone, from bus drivers, to fellow drivers and even pedestrians. We couldn’t help to wonder though if it were all due to this particular paint or due to the overall styling of the car.

Get inside the car and there’s a surprise waiting for you. Remember the name of this car? It’s Gran Coupe, right? Well, the Coupe part is certainly alive and kicking, and that can be noticed everywhere inside, from the driving position (which is extremely low) to the size of the windows and the general layout.

The door panels are seriously leaning towards you, at times giving you a claustrophobic feeling, especially if you adjust your seat to the lowest possible setting.

Driving around town, you’ll notice that the car is not just taunting you with that driving position, but it is really low and really wide. That’s an absolute plus on our behalf as it unquestionably helps out with the driving sensations. After all, that’s what BMWs have to be about in the first place, right?

And it’s outside the city, at higher speeds where the 6 Series Gran Coupe truly shines and shows its valor. That’s where you’ll discover its Gran Tourer character and fall in love with it. But is it worth the trouble?

Since BMW also has the 5 Series on offer in its range and the two share almost every mechanical bit and bob it’s hard to make a logical argument for the 6 Series Gran Coupe. Its sedan counterpart is more practical, offers more space and costs less.

However, not every decision made in this world is based solely on logic and sometimes, our emotions get the best of us. And the 2016 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe has plenty of those sent pulsating to your heart every time you look at it or mash the throttle.
