When the BMW M5 ’30 Jahre Edition’ came out, we were surprised to see the norm being broken. However, that’s a limited production model that is being built in just 300 units. Now with the 2015 BMW X5 M and X6 M, we’re looking at the most powerful production mills the Bavarians ever made.
The updated 4.4-liter V8 mill that uses two turbochargers is now rated at 575 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) as stock, putting to shame the mill used in the anniversary M5 that only has 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque to play around with. On the other hand, the sedan has more horsepower, at 600 HP but, as we said, it’s only a limited run model.

Torque is what we’re after here and the 750 Nm number could point out to some drastic changes in the line-up in the future as well. Apart from being the torquiest engine they ever made, this new S63 plant could preface the one to be introduced on the next-gen M cars from the 5 Series range upwards.

As it is the case today, all cars bigger than the M4 use the same engine

The M5, M6 Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe all share the S63Tü engine rated at 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque. If you want more, you can get the Competition Package for all of them, which gives you 15 extra HP. You’d still be down on torque, though.

The future of the M5 is a highly debatable subject. While BMW insists that power increases will be marginal and that the focus will be on reducing weight (in all the right places mind you), the horsepower war seems to be alive and well amongst German manufacturers at least.

Living proof is the new X5 M that brings a lot more kick than its current rivals, the ML63 AMG and the Cayenne S. If anyone thinks that Mercedes-Benz and Porsche won’t go even further with their new models’ engines, they should really undergo a reality check.
