Volkswagen really is offering more versions of the Golf than ever before. Is it because the MQB platform is so modular that they can turn it into anything cheaply? Or more likely because they want to turn it into the best selling car in the world, ahead of the Focus and Corolla. We don't know for sure, but we do know a new model called the Golf Alltrack was revealed this week and will go on sale in Europe before the end of the year.
Alltrack means adding more body protection, increasing the ride height and tuning the powertrains and electronic safety systems so that they work better in offroad conditions. So far, Volkswagen has done this first to the old Passat and now the Golf Variant.
This next rendering by X-Tomi Design shows what the Alltrack version of a Golf Sportsvan (SV in Britain) would look like. As most of you VW fans are aware, the SV is a direct replacement for the Golf Plus, a German answer to French MPVs. With the last generation, the Golf Plus actually had something resembling an Alltrack. It was called the Plus Cross and didn't really catch on.
From our perspective, building the Sportsvan Alltrack doesn't make too much sense. The size and shape of its boot are wrong, while the extra headroom brings with it a handling disadvantage, since more unsprung weight is placed up top. But us motor journalists are hardly the typical MPV buyers, so Volkswagen will probably have to look at this new Alltrack and make up its own mind.
