Introduced in 2006, the Stella nameplate is one of the best selling models sold by Subaru in the Land of the Rising Sun. A direct reference to the Subaru logo, the starry eyed and named Stella shares its platform with the Daihatsu Move, the top seller of the class.
We’re not sure if its name was inspired by Victor Young’s jazz standard Stella by Starlight from 1944’s movie The Uninvited because its shape resembles that of a skiffle music tea chest bass. Still, the 2015 Subaru Stella is a kei car, the cheapest way of personal transportation in kei car crazy Japan.

The third generation supercompact just went on sale in the Asian country, in either Stella or Stella Custom guises. As for pricing, the equivalent of $8,840 before local taxes is as low as you can go for the entry-level specification. Whichever Stella model you buy, all variations come with the same powertrain.

Modern kei car regulations limit engine displacement to a diminutive 660 cc. This is why the 2015 Subaru Stella is either FWD and RWD, propelled by a 0.6-liter turbo three-cylinder hamster wheel, limited to a mere 64 horsepower. In terms of cog swapping, only a seamless shifting CVT gearbox is offered.

With a 73 mpg (3.2 l/100 km) fuel economy for the 2WD version, this lil' bugger is really cheap to run. It may be not as stylized and neo-retro funky as the Honda N-Box Slash, but even so, the Stella Comes with Hill Hold as standard and options such as a 4.2-inch touchscreen, collision braking assist and LED lights.
