2015 Hyundai Sonata Recalled Over Wiring Problem

Hyundai has big hopes for its all-new 2015 Sonata, but things might be getting off to a rocky start. As fresh units of the redesigned midsize sedan were just starting to roll onto dealership showrooms last month, a poor wiring harness connection within the instrument panel has necessitated a recall and a stop-sale until the repair can be performed.
The faulty connection located behind the glove box can create an open circuit in the chassis controller, which could lead to reduced power steering assist and the inability to shift the car out of Park. The latter would simply lead to a car being stranded, but the loss of power steering assist could lead to a crash. Fortunately, only 12 retail customers had taken delivery of their 2015 Hyundai Sonata when this recall was first issued, and no accidents had been reported.

As a remedy, dealerships will repair the electrical connection to ensure the wiring for this circuit stays properly in place. In total, the recall affects 2,138 of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata sedans manufactured from May 2 through May 23 of which 2,080 are in the U.S. and another 58 were shipped to Puerto Rico. Since all of the affected retail owners have been notified, there probably isn’t a need to be concerned if you’re a new owner of a 2015 Sonata, but if you have questions, you can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline either by calling 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visiting the www.safercar.gov website.

As many recalls that have been reported this year, this is probably is about as smooth of a recall as an automaker could hope for on a new product launch, but with the midsize sedan segment heating up, it’s still something Hyundai would surely have liked to have avoided. This year alone, the new Chrysler 200, Subaru Legacy and Toyota Camry have been introduced, while the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima continue to be strong sellers as well.
