The brand-new 2015 Genesis luxury sedan from Hyundai has just been tested by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and received the maximum rating, reassuring for customers who will soon buy the car.
This next video released by the IIHS shows the harsh small overlap test being carried out. Under the system that was launched in 2012, all cars have to be crash-tested in this way, hitting a 5-foot-tall rigid barrier at 40 mph with only 25% of their front end.

This puts a lot of strain on the passenger cell and some brand new models have failed and in rare occasions the door has come off. Fortunately, the new Genesis is well built and the measures recorded on the driver dummy indicated low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.

To receive the maximum "Plus" rating, the Genesis has had to go one step above what most Hyundais can offer. The IIHS requires cars to be available with an active crash prevention system. In track tests, the institute fount that the car stopped completely before hitting the target in tests at 12 mph and 25 mph.

“The TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation recognizes state-of-the-art safety,” said IIHS president, Adrian Lund. “The new Genesis is not only engineered to protect people when crashes happen, but with its optional automatic emergency braking system rated superior in our tests, this car can help drivers avoid some of the most common kinds of collisions altogether."
