This year’s Gumball 3000 Rally saw us traveling with the Anastasia Date and Asian Date teams for a rather unique, unforgettable experience. After writing about the craziness of the phenomenon for some years, it was finally time to attend it first-hand.
The experience was beyond anything this one editor expected. We actually kept a journal of the whole thing and you can check each day here, here, here and lastly here.
Sure, it’s all extremely tiring and, as you’re going to observe from the video below, people start getting groggier and angrier as time goes by due to the lack of sleep. You’ll notice the bags under the eyes of the models that were riding with us and that says a lot. If an international model can’t keep it together, what can regular people like you and I do?
Even so, it’s something you have to experience for yourself the moment you’re given the chance. Our team decided to make a daring move when deciding what cars to drive from Stockholm to Las Vegas and, instead of using modern hypercars, the decision was made to go for retro muscle cars from the good old US of A.
Therefore, the day the rally started in Sweden, two 1969 Camaro Z28 cars were lining up at the grid and they wrote history wherever they went. Modified by Steve Elstins back in California, they were definitely the loudest cars in the bunch, Liberty Walk 458 Italia included. Yes, the stroked V8s under the bonnet had two different modes, a ‘quiet’ one that made them as stealthy as an elephant dressed in a ninja and a ‘loud’ one that went all out.
Needless to say that whenever we entered a city, everyone wanted to hear them in loud mode and, therefore, protective headphones became a necessity.
The parties, the way people look at you and treat you, everything makes it all worthwhile and you definitely need to take part in this madness if you can. Next year, the trip will go from Dublin to Istanbul and it will probably be even better than this year. Don’t miss it!
