What do you get when you crossbreed a retro Volvo P1800 ES shooting brake and a 2015 Ford Mustang fastback? Well, it will look something like Theophilus Chin’s latest renderings. Though the pixel artist’s most recent work is technically a shooting brake, Theophilus said that the final product “ended up looking more like a hatchback. What a fail.” You’re too hard on yourself, Mr. Chin!
What we’re dealing with here is a work of fantasy, but it wouldn’t be too bonkers if FoMoCo decided one day to morph the S550-generation Mustang into a far more spacious shooting brake or hatchback, whatever you want to call it. Though if that far fetched idea were to materialize, engineers would definitely need to stretch the pony car’s chassis a little bit for... let’s say aesthetic reasons.
Furthermore, a more practical Mustang was an idea penned by the Ford Motor Company in the early days of the iconic nameplate. Of course it didn’t get into mass production, although the Blue Oval built two prototypes of the wagon-ized ‘Stang, but the bottom line is that Ford considered to offer a more family-oriented Mustang.
Looking at Mercedes-Benz and how the three-pointed star got its CLS adapted into the CLS Shooting Brake, anything is possible at the Detroit-based automaker as well. Too bad Ford doesn’t want a bigger Mustang at the present moment. The American automaker is more focused with its performance-oriented models (2016 Ford Focus RS, anyone?) as of late, so go figure what’s in the cards.
In addition to all of the previously mentioned, modifying the S550 chassis to house a bigger rear end means a lot of R&D money, a commodity the Blue Oval doesn’t have right now. All in all, we are thankful to Ford due to the fact mere mortals like you and me will be able to buy things like the 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang, 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor and the awe-inspiring 2017 Ford GT supercar.
