A new generation of the Euro-spec Volkswagen Passat is now under development, with the vehicle set to be released as a 2014 model and now new details on the vehicle have been released.
According to Auto Motor und Sport, the vehicle will be underpinned by the VW Group’s MQB platform, which will be shared with the Golf VII and Audi A3, which will allow the car to lose some weight.
Thus, the future Passat is expected to tip the scales at around 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs), for the entry-level version. The vehicle will also come with more gadgets, as the platform sharing will allow VW to divert funds towards this area.
As for the engine department, we’ll get upgraded diesels that will meet the Euro 6 emission standards, while petrols should receive tech such as cylinder deactivation and start-stop in order to increase efficiency. It seems that the 3.6-liter V6 range-topping powerplant will be ditched in favor of a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder one.
In addition to that, the Passat could also receive a hybrid version, which could use a powertrain comprised of a 1.4-liter TSI petrol unit and an electric motor, with this offering a combined output of 170 hp.
