And it did! The all-aluminum 132 hp 1.8-liter gasoline 4-cylinder engine ditched the 4-speed automatic transmission in order to get bolted to a new pulley-type CVT gearbox that will be available for the LE, S and LE Eco Corolla models.

The new CVT transmission mimics the characteristics of a regular hydraulic automated gearbox by having discrete stepped ‘gears’, or shift points if you want to put names. This new gearbox also offers ECO and SPORT drive modes for the CVTi-S equipped Corolla models.

Not only is the transmission new, but the engine range gets another setup, represented by the same 1.8-liter but with a Valvematic mechanism to offer a broader range of continuously variable valve timing. This translates more than a 5% improvement in fuel economy as well as 8 more horsepower added to the engines output.

Take a look at the full engine specifications and the CVT’s principle in the gallery bellow.
