Tough luck for Suzuki’s MotoGP team in South America, as the inclement weather hampered the first day of testing at the new circuit in Termas de Rio Hondo, the host of the third round of the current championship.
Rain during the night and a track which would not dry throughout the day prevented the team’s test rider duo Randy De Puniet and Nobuatsu Aoki from getting their bikes out on the track and continuing the development of the XRH-1 prototype. With approximately 6 months ahead of the first pre-season test after the final 2014 race in Valencia, Suzuki is looking for ways to improve their own bike software for the Magneti Marelli spec ECU.

Despite earlier rumors that Suzuki was looking to team up with an existing racing group on the grid, the house of Hamamatsu recently confirmed it will field a Factory option entry for 2015, benefiting from certain exceptions new teams are allowed in their debut year. This includes unlimited testing, supplemental engines, more fuel and a non-frozen engine, perk normally reserved to the Open class teams.

After initially developing the XRH-1 MotoGP bike using a Mitsubishi ECU, Suzuki decided to start working on understanding the mandatory Marelli one and this was one of the main reasons for going Factory in 2015. Since 2016 will bring an unified software created by a common effort from all the teams, Suzuki’s decision looks like a very wise one, allowing its engineers to get familiar with the spec ECU using their own methods, before swapping over to the spec software.

Certain weather websites say there will be morning showers in the Termas de Rio Hondo area, so it’s hard to tell whether Suzuki will have more luck testing today, in the final day of the session.
