German automaker Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the S500 Plug-in Hybrid ahead of the vehicle’s public debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
Claimed to offer a fuel consumption of 3 liters / 100 km (about 78.4 US mpg) and emit only 69 g/km of CO2, the S500 Plug-in Hybrid is motivated by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 328 BHP and 480 Nm and an electric motor that adds another 107 BHP and 340 Nm.
The combo enables the plug-in hybrid sedan to reach a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.5 seconds. Besides the Hybrid mode, the vehicle can be used on electric power alone (E-Mode), in E-Save mode (battery maintained for electric-only use) and Charge mode (enables the battery to charge while driving).
"With the S500 Plug-in Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz sets another milestone on the road to emission-free mobility on the basis of our modular hybrid matrix", said Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, responsible on the Daimler Board of Management for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Product Engineering. "In this way the S-Class turns into a genuine three-liter car with generous space and superlative drive-system comfort."
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid will arrive in dealerships sometime next year.
