One more GS Trophy team was announced last week, and this time it’s the Latin America one. March 14-16 saw the battle in the the Latin America Regional Qualification, with riders from Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru assembled at the Llano Grande Club Campestre in Colombia, some 25 miles (40 km) from the capital Medellin.
No less than 15 of the best riders from each country have assembled in the off-road park, knowing that only the best three of them will go on to the GS Trophy in Canada this year. The first day of the trials was a tiring test of group work, with the riders having to collaborate in a tough navigation test involving technical riding, coordination and organization. The test was 37 miles-long (60km) and even comprised an almost vertical 65ft (20m) drop, motocross track riding, all under the Colombian rain.

Multiple other track tasks were in line, including a penalty contest in which riders could gain extra points by kicking a football and scoring a goal while on the bike. Saturday ended in a bizarre and terribly funny rafting contest: riders had to navigate across the water on a bamboo raft, carrying a GS bike. Little did they know that the raft was rigged, with a special keel which faced the wrong way, making it almost impossible to advance.

Sunday brought individual contests, with 10 trials to sort out through the riders until the best trio was chosen. Latin America will be represented by Andrés Camilo Patiño from Colombia, Alejandro Gómez from Costa Rica and Esteban Ferrer from Colombia. They will be heading over to Canada for the world final for the BMW Motorrad GS Trophy 2014, doing battle with multiple other teams around the world.
