Though Stage 8 is still in progress, we already know the top riders reaching the finish line of the Salta/Uyuni – Calama leg. Cyril Despres takes his first win this year and maybe there is still some theoretical chance for him to regain the 2h23m gag separating him from the leader of the provisional standings, Marc Coma.
The Yamaha rider was followed by Honda's Barreda and Coma, with Helder Rodrigues (Honda) and Olivier Pain (Yamaha) for top 5. However, with only 2m09s ahead of Barreda and 2m15s ahead of Coma, Despres's victory only counted towards his personal records.
Despres is now in the 8th position overall, but the 2014 Dakar is about time and not stage wins. We'll be back with more after all the riders cross the finish line.
