In the wake of what will possibly be the diesel revolution in the US, BMW is launching its LCI 5 Series on the North American continent in both petrol and diesel variants. Unfortunately, the States get only the 535d model and everyone’s curious about it.

The guys from Bimmerfile took one for a quick spin to see exactly if things sound too good to be true or if they really are as BMW claims. The engine under the bonnet of this car is a 3-liter diesel with only one turbocharger that uses the all-familiar TwinTurbo technology. It develops 258 HP and 560 Nm of torque, plenty even for a big sedan such as the F10 5 Series.

The car comes by default with the 8-speed gearbox from ZF that makes things even better, driving the fuel efficiency figures well above 30 MPG outside the city and in the mid 20s inside it. That being said, the savings you’re going to get with this diesel should be enough to convince you to buy it but for some people that’s not enough. Some also worry about the noise this kind of combustion will make down the road. You shouldn’t. This is a refined USD60,000 car, on par with the ‘findings’ of the 21 century.

Read the full test to convince yourself.
