The Mk V Golf GTI was universally like for its excellent blend of power and comfort. It also didn’t have the sort of monumental competition that the Mk VI faces today. Beck when it was launched, the Megane RS and Focus ST both had only slightly more power, and there were no hyper hatches around.
But nowadays, any sort of dynamic hot hatch test centers around the Megane, who’s impressive power and focused chassis are basically unrivaled this side of a Focus RS.
Volkswagen is one of the biggest automakers in the world and it hasn’t take its defeat sitting down. With the brand new, seventh-gen Golf, they’ve really upped the ante in the GTI department.
According to AutoCar, the new GTI will have a more impressive 260 horsepower to play with. Not only that, but it will come with a “more agile steering behavior” thanks to a new VAQ electronically-controlled front differential, which apparently is 8 seconds faster round the Nurburgring than a conventional mechanical diff.
We’re guessing the US market version will have slightly less power due to emissions regulations, but the output will still be on par with expectations.
