Volkswagen might have been a little late to the hybrid game, but it’s managed to put a completely different spin on the idea with the new Jetta Hybrid that has been officially revealed today at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.
The innovative hybrid drivetrain combines a turbocharged 1.4-liter TSI with 150 horsepower and a 20 kw electric motor. The combined output is 170 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG gearbox.
This platform allows for consumption figures that are 20 percent lower than what the equivalent petrol powered models - 45 mpg on the US cycle. What’s more, the car isn’t exactly slow, posting a 0 to 60 mph time of less than 9 seconds. Also, in electric-only mode, the Jetta Hybrid can reach 44 mph (77 Km/h) and can travel for approximately 1.3 miles or 21 kilometers.
