Yesterday, we brought you a couple of brochure scans of the brand new SL from Mercedes Benz. Now, we have full high definition images of the two-seater which were leaked and fell into our hands.
The R231 generation of SL will only be revealed at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January, so we don’t have official specs to go with our photos, but we can tell you that the SL has gone back to its roots, thanks to a drastic weight-saving program.

As for what’s under the bonnet, the photos in the gallery below show both the 3.5-liter SL 350, which should have about 305 hp, and the SL 500, which might boast about 390 horsepower.

The photos also reveal some personalization options, a number of different colors including a matte gray factory finish, and even the designo Edition leatherwork.

SL stands for Super Light, which for the older generations was kind of ironic. However, even though it still weighs 1.7 tons, this roadster is not that bad. You can than aluminum construction for the 100 kilograms (220 lbs) that have been lost compared to its predecessor. Even the trademark folding metal roof is made using magnesium to keep the kilos off.

The SL has been around since the stunning 300SL of 1952. In that time, it has gone through only only six transformations, making it the German equivalent of the Lamborghini V12 supercar. And no, we're not kidding, the SL can have a V12 engine as well.

New technologies? How about the world premier of Magic Vision Control. That's an extremely fancy name for windscreen wiper that have little jets inside to spread the water.

The SL 500 remains the most popular model, but a new SL 400 with a twin-turbo V6 has been introduced in 2014, replacing the underpowered 350 model.
